Astrid Jones is a high-school senior who loves philosophy, is ambivalent about her own sexuality and guards the secrets of her friends. She has a strained relationship with her Type-A mother and her underemployed dad. Her younger sister just wants to fit in, while Astrid is torn between the urge to conform and the wish to live her life on her own terms. Amidst this ambivalence, Astrid spends hours lying on a picnic table sending messages of love to anonymous passengers in the airplanes flying overhead, whose own stories parallel Astrid’s desire to escape the constraint, judgment and intolerance of her small town.
